A mesmerizing debut psychological thriller full of delicious twists about a coolly manipulative woman who worms her way into the lives of a wealthy “golden couple” from Connecticut to achieve the privileged life she wants.
Amber Patterson is fed up. She’s tired of being a nobody: a plain, invisible woman who blends into the background. She deserves more—a life of money and power like the one blond-haired, blue-eyed goddess Daphne Parrish takes for granted. To everyone in the exclusive town of Bishops Harbor, Connecticut, Daphne and her husband, Jackson—the beautiful philanthropist and the confident real estate mogul—are a golden couple straight out of a fairytale, blessed with two lovely young daughters.
Amber’s envy could eat her alive . . . if she didn't have a plan. Amber uses Daphne’s compassion and caring to insinuate herself into the family’s life—the first step in a meticulous scheme to undermine her. Before long, Amber is Daphne’s closest confidante, traveling to Europe with the Parrish family, and growing closer to Jackson. But a skeleton from her past may undermine everything that Amber has worked towards, and if it is discovered, her well-laid plan may fall to pieces.
With shocking turns and dark secrets that will keep you guessing until the very end, The Last Mrs. Parrish is a fresh, juicy, and utterly addictive thriller from a diabolically imaginative talent.
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts.
The fall of any literary year is steeped in capital L Literature. And YAY!, because I love capital L Literature.
But sometimes a girl just wants a twisty, turny, quick read.
It’s like after eating healthy and clean for a couple of months, and suddenly you find yourself craving a McDonald’s hamburger.
I guess The Last Mrs. Parrish is that McDonald’s hamburger.
I won’t try to fool you by telling you it has some great literary value, but I will tell you it was a good story. The story, written by sisters Lynne and Valerie Constantine using the pen name Liv Constantine, is incredibly twisted.
Told in alternative perspectives, The Last Mrs. Parrish starts as Amber’s story. She wants to be rich and spoiled, and will connive and scheme her way to the top. She’s a character straight out of 80’s television — “Dallas” and “Dynasty” come to mind, but “Magnum PI,” “Murder, She Wrote,” and “The Love Boat” all had their fair share of conniving gold diggers.
She wants Jackson Parrish, and there’s no stopping her.
Half way through the book, the narrator switches up to Daphne Parrish. And the story changes quite dramatically.
Truthfully, though, I knew the plot twist was coming. Not just that there would be a twist, but the particular twist.
I kept reading, though, and I was right. The twist, the other twist, and the final plunge of the twisty dagger — I had them all figured out.
Nonetheless, The Last Mrs. Parrish is a fun romp down a dark path. It’s a quick read, one that will take you two or three sittings (or a couple of hours, if you have that long to sit and read).
Not great literature, but it will satisfy your junk food cravings.
